Laird Hamilton’s passion is big wave surfing where surfers are towed onto waves which are at least 20 feet high. He is also credited with the invention of Tow-in surfing where a partner driving a personal watercraft or a helicopter with an attached tow-line tows a surfer into a breaking wave. Laird was born in San Francisco, California on March 2, 1964. One unique aspect of his birth is that he was born in a bathysphere, a spherical deep-sea submersible which is unpowered and is lowered into the ocean on a cable. Although his birth this way was just incidental, but the curious fact is that a person born under the sea made his career on the sea later in his life. After his father left the family before Laird could turn one, his mother settled in Hawaii. There Laird grew up and demonstrated his spirit of adventure from an early age. It was at Hawaii’s Oahu Island where he lived that Laird met Bill Hamilton who was to earn his fame as an ace surfer. Laird struck a close friendship with Bill. Bill was then a bachelor and ran a small business of making surf boards. These surf boards were custom made and manually crafted by Bill himself who was a professional surfboard shaper and glasser. In addition Bill was himself an avid surfer. After their bodysurfing session, Laird invited Bill to his home to meet his mother. As it turned out Bill fell in love with Laird’s young and beautiful mother who was single at that time. The two decided to tie the knot making Bill, Laird’s adoptive father. Laird took on his surname ‘Hamilton’ and became Laird Hamilton by which name he has earned name and fame. After marriage, Bill, Liard and his mother moved to the island of Kauai where they set up a new home in a remote valley. There the couple was blessed with a son, who was Lairds’ half-brother Lyon who also grew up to become a surfer. Another aspect of Laird and also of his half-brother Lyon was that they were well built, fair and blond, unlike many other classmates of theirs. So they developed an aggressive never-say-die complex. The brothers developed into daredevils and were afraid of nothing. This mindset helped them in their lifetime career in surfing. In their father the brothers had an excellent coach and they lived in an area which offered them ample opportunities for surfing, it being one of the best surfing regions in the world. Apart from surfing he also tried his hand at modeling. Later he also acted in a movie named ‘North Shore,’ but seeing the politics in surfing contests and the factors like chance and luck in the sport, he kept away from sporting contests. He earned his fame and fortune by doing unusual stunts like Tow-in surfing. After a successful ongoing career in surfing, Laird Hamilton also is an environmental activist. So in a heady mix of surfing, modeling, and films he has pursued a career mix that has taken him to great heights literally.
